My involvement with Jace Hall's I Play WoW video began when was brought in to shoot by an incredible music video director by the name of Carey Williams. Carey and I had previously collaborated on videos for two other artists (Ribkat and Pac Div). It was our collaboration on these two videos that made Carey sure I was the right guy to shoot Jace's video. I originally had to turn down the video due to a scheduling conflict I had with a feature I was shooting in Chicago called The Removed. I was disappointed that I was going to miss out on the shoot, but that's how the business works. Thankfully, a conflict within the production forced the video to push by a week and I was able to commit.
By the time I had returned from Chicago Carey had already locked down a location. Less than 48hrs after returning from shooting the feature, Carey and I were on a tech scout figuring out the logistics for the shoot. The primary set for the video was originally supposed to be a bedroom within the same house, but during the tech scout we realized the living room of the house would work much better. If you've already seen the video, I think you'll agree, the kitchen/living room proved to be a pretty sweet space.
Another interesting twist is that in the original treatment, the party that Jace attends is supposed to be filled with hot young trendy friends of Alicia (his girlfriend). Jace would then hide in several places throughout the party and secretly play WoW. Unfortunately, due to a casting snafu, all of the extras that showed up were true World of Warcraft fans! This is where a treatment goes out the window and you have to be quick on your feet. Carey and I stepped aside and came up with the idea that you see in the video. Instead of hiding, Jace is with his people! If you ask me, this was a happy accident. I truly believe when Jace comes into that party and sees other WoW fans it is the best moment of the video.
I hope you enjoy the video. We had a lot of fun shooting it.
